PURPOSE: In preparing an olefin by decomposing thermally a raw material of ≥2C hydrocarbon in the presence of steam or subjecting it to catalytic cracking, to increase its yield, by adding a specific amount of cyclopentane to the raw material.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material (e.g., mixture of naphtha and cyclopentane, etc.) ≥2C hydrocarbon is thermally decomposed in the presence of steam or subjected to catalytic cracking to give an olefin. In the operation, 3W60wt%, preferably 5W50wt%, more preferably 7W50wt% cyclopentane (e.g., one obtained by distilling fractionally a reaction product of naphtha by thermal decomposition or catalytic cracking to give 5C hydrocarbon fraction, followed by hydrogenating it, etc.) is added to the raw material. The adjustment of the amount of the cyclopentane can change a ratio of ethylene/propylene to be formed.
