Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound usable as an intermediate for medicines and pesticides in a high yield, by reacting p-nitrotoluene with sodium polysulfide in a mixed solvent of an alcohol and an aqueous alkali solution in the presence of an aprotic polar compound.
CONSTITUTION: P-Nitrotoluene is reacted with sodium polysulfide in a mixed solvent of an alcohol and an aqueous alkali solution, preferably an alcohol comprising 80% or more of ethanol, in the presence of an aprotic polar compound, e.g. N, N-dimethylformamide, etc. to give p-aminobenzaldehyde. The presence of 0.01W 10 wt.% based on the p-nitrotoluene of the aprotic polar compound increases the yield greatly
