Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a polyoxypropylene diketone with a high selectivity from a polyoxypropylene glycol.
CONSTITUTION: A polyoxypropylene diketone having an average molecular weight of from 200 to 3,000 is prepared by oxidizing a polyoxypropylene glycol with a hypochlorite of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal in the presence of, based on 100 pts.wt. polyoxypropylene glycol, from 5 to 100 pts.wt. carboxylic acid having a pK of smaller than 4.5 and a water solubility at 25°C of larger than 1%, chosen from benzoic acid, chlorine-substituted benzoic acid, oxalic acid and glycolic acid.
