PURPOSE: To obtain fine particles of beryllia having high purity by dissolving beryllium alkoxide in an org. solvent, and calcining the hydrolyzate of beryllium alkoxide at low temp.
CONSTITUTION: The solvent of beryllium alkoxide soln. obtd. by mixing anhydrous BeCl2 with stoichiometric amt. of alkali alkoxide and refluxing the mixture by heating is substituted with a single solvent (e.g. benzene) and by-products are removed. Then, the soln. of the beryllium alkoxide in the single solvent is admixed with decarboxylated distilled water at 0W100°C, or allowed to contact with steam blown out of a pressurized vessel at 100W200°C, to cause hydrolysis and powdery Be(OH)2 is obtd. in the form of white precipitate. Thereafter, the powdery body obtd. by filtering and drying the precipitate is calcined at ≥400°C and blow the m.p. of beryllia. Thus, beryllia powder having high purity having 0.01W0.1 micron particle size and ≤0.1wt% impurity is obtd.
