PURPOSE: To obtain the titled copolymer having improved rolling friction resistance, fracture characteristics and processability, by polymerizing styrene with butadiene in a specific reactor, and coupling the resultant random copolymer with a tin halide compound.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene is copolymerized with 1,3-butadiene in a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. cyclohexane, in the presence of an ethereal compound, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, or a tertiary amine compound, e.g. triethylamine, and further an organolithium compound, e.g. n-butyl lithium, in a refluxing self-cooling reactor provided with a condenser while keeping the ultimate temperature of the polymerization system at 120°C or below to give a styrene-butadiene random copolymer containing no terminal polystyrene block chain, which is then subjected to the coupling reaction with a tin halide compound, e.g. SnCl4, to afford the aimed copolymer containing at least 10% polymer containing C-Sn bonds.
