PURPOSE: To assimilate a 3W4C straight chain α-olefin introduced into a culture medium containing a carbon source, e.g. glucose, convert the α-olefin into the corresponding epoxide and collect the formed epoxide continuously, by cultivating a microorganism belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, etc. in the culture medium.
CONSTITUTION: A microorganism, belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, Brevibacterium or Nocardia, e.g. Corynebacterium alkanum, Brevibacterium butanicum or Nocardia corallina, and having the ability to assimilate and convert a 3W4C straight chain α-olefin into the corresponding epoxide is cultivated. The resultant suspension of the microbial cells is adjuted and contained in a reacting tank with a carbon source, e.g. glucose, sucrose or saccharide. A 3W4C α-olefin, i.e. propylene or 1-butene, is added to the suspension, and the resultant suspension is reacted under aerobic conditions to take out the aimed epoxide from the system.
