Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and compositions for preventing or treating cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury in a mammalian subject.SOLUTION: A composition contains an aromatic-cationic peptide is a peptide having: at least one net positive charge; a minimum of four amino acids; a maximum of about 20 amino acids; a relationship between the minimum number of net positive charges (p) and the total number of amino acid residues (r) in which 3 pis the largest number that is less than or equal to r+1; and a relationship between the minimum number of aromatic groups (a) and the total number of net positive charges (p) in which 2a is the largest number that is less than or equal to p+1 and, when a is 1, pmay also be 1.SELECTED DRAWING: None
