PURPOSE: To provide a printer that can easily cope with changes in display contents without changing programs stored therein in a printer equipped with a function capable of changing outputs in accordance with operating conditions and set items.

CONSTITUTION: The subject printer is equipped with a nonvolatile memory 4 that stores character rows indicating set items for printing condition and operating condition of the printer and a memory 3 storing programs which reads out, with reference made to the nonvolatile memory 4, the character rows corresponding to the set items and operating conditions to which the reference is made and outputs the read-out character rows. The device is specifically constructed so that input of the read-out character rows can be made to a printer 1 with an input means 2 that inputs the character rows, and contents of the character rows in the nonvolatile memory 4 can be changed by replacing the character rows stored in the nonvolatile memory 4 with the inputted character rows.
