To suppress erroneous determination of a near-end state of roll paper R.SOLUTION: A printing device 1 includes: a roll paper storage unit that stores roll paper; a platen roller 65 that transports recording paper pulled out from the roll paper; an optical sensor 75 that outputs different outputs according to a diameter of the roll paper; and a control unit 100 that determines whether the roll paper is in a near-end state, using an output of the optical sensor 75, in which the control unit 100 determines whether or not the roll paper is in the near-end state without using the output detected by the optical sensor 75 when the platen roller 65 is accelerated.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 14
