PURPOSE: To effectively utilize purge gas rich in hydrogen from a process of synthesizing methanol from hydrocarbon by menufacturing ammonia using the purge gas and nitrogen as starting materials.
CONSTITUTION: Purge gas P from the process of synthesizing methanol M is heated in heating furnace H and mixed with steam St to raise the temp. At the same time, air A is fed to secondary reforming furnace R2 to reform gas P. Thus, methane, methanol, traces of ether and other alcohols in gas P are converted into carbon oxide and hydrogen. Ammonia is manufactured using the resulting gas as starting material for hydrogen together with nitrogen. Gaseous or liq. hydrocarbon is used as starting material for synthesizing methanol M, and natural gas generating much excess hydrogen in the methanol synthesizing process is used especially preferably.
