PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compd. with a high purity and in a high yield by reacting a halohydroxypropyl ester of a (substd.) acrylic acid with a trialkylamine in a non-solvent to the subject material in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and a catalyst containing an epoxy residue.
CONSTITUTION: A halohydroxypropyl ester (A) of an acid of formula I (R is H, 1-4C alkyl) is reacted with a trialkylamine in a non-solvent to the subject compd. (e.g. acetonitrile) in the presence of a catalyst of an epoxy compd. of formula II (R2 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alalkyl, amine, trimethylammonium ion. etc.) at a temperature of 50-85°C to obtain the subject compd. Ester A is obtained by reacting methacrylic acid with epichlorhydrine in the presence of a catalyst such as 3methacryloyloxy2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride. A crystalline monomer of a larger particle size and molecular weight is obtained.
