Abstract:
Prepn. of carboxylic acid esters of m-phenoxybenzyl alcohol or its alpha-cyano or alpha-ethynyl deriv. comprises reacting the alcohol with a Me or Et ester of the carboxylic acid in the presence of NaOMe or NaOEt in an inert solvent. The reaction is effected at >=80 degrees C (pref. 80-130 degrees C) under conditions such that the MeOH or EtOH formed is distd. off as it is formed. The solvent is pref. a liq. which boilds at the reaction temp. and forms an azeotrope with MeOH or EtOH, and is used in an amt. of >=2 times the amt.). The process is esp. useful for preparing pyrethrin-type esters with insecticidal activity. It gives minimal conversion of the cis form of these esters to the less active trans form. In an example, m-phenoxybenzyl 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)- cyclopropanecarboxylate (cis: trans=41.5:58.5) is prepd. from m-phenoxybenzyl alcohol and the Et ester of the corresp. acid (cis: trans=58.42).
