Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide succinic anhydride while prolonging the catalyst life and retaining the catalyst activity by adding succinic anhydride to maleic anhydride and hydrogenating in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst in a specific condition.
SOLUTION: Succinic anhydride is obtained by reacting starting materials containing (A) 5 to 100 wt.%. of maleic anhydride, and (B) 95 to 0% of succinic acid, diesters of succinic acid, succinimides, polyesters or a block composing the synthetic component valuable for the synthesis of the subject compound, over the hydrogenation catalyst comprising a Raney skeleton catalyst or a catalyst of the transition element of group I or group VIII, under hydrogen pressure of 10 to 150 bar (especially 50 to 120 bar is preferred), at 120 to 150°C.
