PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound that has a pharmacological activity of antidepressant drugs or the like with higher purity in no need of use of a halogen derivative and/or an alkylamine by using a specific diphenylmethane.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula (I) is prepared by reduction of (A) 2-(3-cyanopropoxy)diphenylmethane of formula (II) with (B) a suitable reducing agent to obtain (C) 2-(4-aminobutoxy)diphenylmethane of formula (III) followed by a treatment with an amino-N-methylation agent (D) and optional salification with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid. The reaction between the components A and B is carried out by the catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst, and dimethyl sulfate is used as the component D to treat the hydrogenated product therewith in a solvent, preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon and in the presence of an aldehyde such as benzaldehyde.
