Abstract:
PURPOSE: To make it possible to easily obtain a composite material without incorporating contaminants therein by continuously drawing a melt together with a precursor out of a drawing nozzle at the bottom of a crucible in which two molten materials of different compsns. are melted.
CONSTITUTION: A molten material 15 consisting of natural quartz glass is supplied from a conduit 9 and a starting material 14 consisting of high-purity synthetic glass from a conduit 8 into the melting crucible 1. Next, the precursor 21 is simultaneously and continuously deposited in the crucible 1. Glass particles 14 of one side and the glass particles 15 of another compsn. are then made to exist adjacently at a boundary 36 extending nearly parallel with the drawing out direction of an arrow 22. The crucible 1 is then heated while the precursor 21 is made to form a molten front 35 by the device 6. At this time, an annular furnace 5 is kept at 1800 to 2300°C and the precursor 21 is drawn out of the drawing out nozzle 3 at a rate of 2 to 3 m/h in a direction 22, by which the composite material made of glass, such as annular composite material, having an outside diameter of about 150 mm and a wall thickness of about 20 mm is produced.
