Title:
PROCESSING OF OPTICAL FIBER MATRIX
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS59111937
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To manufacture an optical fiber having low water-content and excellent transmission characteristics, by carrying out the thermal processing of the optical fiber matrix using the combustion heat of carbon monoxide.

CONSTITUTION: The thermal processing (e.g. heat drawing, flame polishing, etc.) of an optical fiber matrix has been carried out hitherto by using the heat of combustion generated by the combustion of hydrogen gas, etc. with oxygen gas; however, the steam blasted toward the hot glass surface is permeated and diffused immediately into the glass to increase the water-content of the glass, resulting in the increase of the transmission loss caused by the absorption of water. When the heat of combustion generated by the combustion of carbon monoxide with oxygen is used as the heat source for the above thermal processing, the exposure of the matrix glass to steam can be avoided and an optical fiber having extremely low water-content can be obtained.
