Abstract:

PURPOSE: To simply and inexpensively obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in one step by condensing a phenol to glyoxal in the presence of a basic substance.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol (preferably phenol) is subjected to condensation reaction with glyoxal in the presence of a basic substance such as NaOH or KOH, preferably at 25-65°C, normally for 0.5-8hr to provide the objective compound. The phenol and glyoxal are preferably added in a ratio of (10/1) to (1/1) and the ratio of the addition amount of the basic substance to glyoxal is preferably (1/1) to (0.1/1). Furthermore, the reaction is carried out under an inert gas atmosphere at ordinary pressure after the phenol, glyoxal and the basic substance are charged into a reactor.
