PURPOSE: To industrially obtain 1-amino-2-alkoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone at low cost in high yield with byproduct formation suppressed, by reaction of raw material compounds in the presence of an alkaline agent and a phenolic compound while feeding oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound of formula I (X is Cl or Br) is reacted with (B) an alcohol compound of formula R-OH (R is a straight-chain or branched alkyl which may be substituted with OH, alkoxyl, phenoxy, cresoxy, phenyl, etc.) in the presence of (C) an alkaline agent (esp. pref. potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate or potassium carbonate) and (D) a phenolic compound (esp. pref. phenol, m- or p-cresol) while feeding oxygen to obtain the objective compound, 1-amino-2-alkoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone of formula II. It is preferable that the oxygen to be fed for the reaction is in the form of an oxygen- contg. gas pref. 3-10wt.% in oxygen content.
