PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain F134a usable as a substitute for F12 by subjecting F133a to vapor phase catalytic fluorination with gaseous hydrofluoric acid in the presence of a catalyst consisting of oxides of Ni and Cr deposited on an aluminum fluoride carrier.
CONSTITUTION: 1-Chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (F133a) is catalytically fluorinated with gaseous hydrofluoric acid at 300-420°C, preferably 330-410°C under 10-20 absolute bar, preferably 12-16 absolute bar pressure in the presence of a mixed catalyst consisting of oxides, halides, and/or oxyhalides of Ni and Cr deposited on a carrier made of aluminum fluoride or an aluminum fluoride-alumina mixture to obtain the objective 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (F134a). The total amt. of Ni and Cr in the catalyst is 0.5-20 wt.%, preferably 2-10 wt.% and the atomic ratio of Ni to Cr is 0.5-5, preferably about 1.
