Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain 2-amino benzylalcohols of high purity, which are important intermediates as raw materials of drugs, at a high yield by using a simple operation, i.e., hydrogenation of 2-nitro-benzaldehydes in the presence of a metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Aminobenzylalcohols of formula II is obtained by a hydrogenation of 2-nitrobenzaldehydes of formula I (each one of R1 and R2 is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy or a halogen) in the presence of a metal catalyst. As to the metal catalyst, palladium or platinum is preferable. And also nickel, especially Raney nickel is preferable. This reaction is preferably conducted at 10-150°C, specifically at 40-80°C, and at a reacting hydrogen pressure of 2-20kg/cm12 (gage pressure), specifically at 3-20kg/cm2. As to the compound of formula I, e.g. 4,5- dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde, 4,6-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde, 3,6- dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde, etc., can be used.
