To efficiently obtain a trihalocrotonate compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for agrochemicals, medicines, etc., by producing a mixture of a specific trihaloacetoacetate derivative with an amine salt, etc., and heating the mixture.
A mixture containing a 4,4,4-trihaloacetoacetate derivative of formula I [X is fluoro or chloro; A is O, S or NR5 (R5 is H, a 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, phenyl, etc.); B is R6, OR6, SR6 or NR3R4; R, R3, R4 and R6 are each R5] and an amine salt or an ammonium salt of weak acid represented by the formula R1R2NH2+Y- (R1 and R2 are each R5; Y- is an anion of weak acid) is produced and the mixture is heated to 20-180°C to provide the objective 3-amino-4,4,4-trihalocrotonate compound of formula II. Furthermore, ethanol is preferably used as the solvent.
