PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals and azo-dyes, etc., in high purity and yield, by catalytically reducing 93-oxobutyl)benzenes with hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst and ammonia.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound can be produced by catalytically reducing (3-oxobutyl)benzenes [e.g. 4-(oxobutyl)phenol] with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel-based metal catalyst and/or a noble metal catalyst and ammonia at 50W200°C under hydrogen partial pressure of 1W20kg/cm2. The nickel-based metal catalyst is preferably stabilized nickel supported on diatomaceous earth and the noble metal catalyst is preferably supported palladium catalyst such as palladium-carbon catalyst. The amount of ammonia is 1.1W2mol. per 1mol. of the (3-oxobutyl)benzenes.
