Abstract:
PURPOSE: To simply produce a high-purity yellow coupler useful as a silver halide color photographic material and its high-purity synthetic intermediate under mild conditions at a low cost with high productivity.
CONSTITUTION: A 3-substituted-3-oxopropionamide compound of formula III [R1 is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, etc.; R2 is a substituent group; (n) is an integer of 0-5] is halogenated with a 1,3-dihalo-5,5dimethylhydantoin (e.g. 1,3-dibromo-5,5- dimethylhydantoin) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium methoxide) in a solvent such as ethyl acetate, preferably at -80 to +100°C, especially preferably at 0-80°C to provide a 3-substituted-3-oxo-2-halopropionamide compound of formula I (X1 is a halogen). Furthermore, the resultant 3-substituted-3-oxo-2- halopropionamide compound of formula I is then reacted with 5,5- dimethylhydantoin in the presence of the base (e.g. sodium methoxide) in the solvent such as ethyl acetate, preferably at -20 to +100°C, especially preferably at 0-80°C to afford a 2-substituted-3-oxo-2-(5,5-dimethylhydantoin-3-yl) propionamide compound of formula II.
