PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in high yield by chlorinating hydroxyl group of 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoro-1-propanol to give 3-chloro-1,1,1,2,2- pentafluoropropane and further chlorinating 3-chloro-1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane.
CONSTITUTION: Hydroxyl group of 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoro-1-propanol, for example, is reacted with any of various kinds of sulfonic acid halide under an alkali condition to give a sulfonic ester, which is heated with an alkali metal chloride in an inert solvent or in a solventless state and chlorinated at two stages or is reacted with SOCl2 in the presence of pyridine and directly chlorinated to give 3-chloro-1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane. Then this compound is chlorinated or in a gaseous phase or liquid phase and further chlorinated to give 3,3- dichloro-1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane in high yield.
