PURPOSE: To produce the subject compound in high yield by coupling a 3- vinylphenyl magnesium halide with a 3-vinylphenyl halide in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective 3,3'-divinylbiphenyl of formula can be produced by the coupling reaction of a 3-vinylphenyl magnesium halide with a 3- vinylphenyl halide in an organic solvent (e.g. diethyl ether or diethylene glycol diethyl ether) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (especially preferably a nickel complex compound). 3,3'-Divinylbiphenyl has excellent compatibility and is extremely easily handleable in practical uses such as polymerization. It can be applied to paint, adhesive, vulcanizing agent for rubber, photosensitive resin, ion exchange resin, etc. It is useful also as a raw material for transparent resin having high refractive index.
