Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing 4-fluorothiophenol, capable of allowing each process to proceed in a good yield and capable of giving the compound in a high purity and in a high yield by allowing 4- fluorobenzenesulfonyl chloride to react with sodium bisulfite, reducing the reaction product with SO2, and finally allowing the reaction product to react with NaBH4 in a specific organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: This method for producing 4-fluorothiophenol comprises allowing 4-fluorobenzenesulfonyl chloride to react with sodium bisulfite in a solvent, reducing the obtained sodium 4-fluorobenzenesulfinate with sulfur dioxide, allowing the obtained 4,4'-difluorodiphenyl difulfide to react with sodium borohydride in an inactive organic solvent miscible with water, evaporating off e.g. the solvent from the obtained 4-fluorothiophenol sodium salt solution, acidifying the obtained solution, separating an organic phase and, if suitable, purifying the organic phase. The method may be performed as an one pot synthesis. The fluorothiophenol is useful as an intermediate for producing pharmaceutically active substances.
