Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely and easily obtain, in high yield with minute amounts of byproducts, a compound useful as an intermediate for liquid crystals, functional resins, etc., by chloromethylation of biphenyl in the presence of water, an inert organic solvent and a phase-transfer catalyst.
SOLUTION: In the presence of (A) water, (B) an inert organic solvent such as a (cyclo)alkane like n-butane or cyclohexane and (C) a phase-transfer catalyst such as a quaternary ammonium salt [e.g. a combination of a nitrogen-contg. heterocyclic compound such as pyridine, (iso)quinoline or picoline with a 8-18C haloalkyl quaternary salt], (D) biphenyl is chloromethylated using (E) a formaldehyde compound E1, sulfuric acid E2, and an alkali (alkaline earth) metal chloride E3 to obtain the objective compound.
