PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the pigment of pressure-sensitive paper, etc., in high efficiency, by carrying out the dehydrative condensation of an N,N-disubstituted aniline with 1-(4- aminophenyl)ethanol, and if necessary, condensing the product with an alkylation agent.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are lower aliphatic alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, allyl, aryl, propargyl, etc.; R3 is H, lower aliphatic alkyl, lower aliphatic alkoxy or halogen) is subjected to the dehydrative condensation with the compound of formula II at room temperature W 200°C for several hours to obtain an objective compound of formula III, which can be converted if necessary to another objective compound of formula V by condensing with the alkylation agent of formula IV (R4 is the group in R1 and R2; X is residue of the alkylation agent) at 50W150°C for several hours. The objective compound of formula III or formula IV useful as an intermediate for the pigment of pressure-sensitive paper and an organic photo-conductor for electrophotography can be produced by the above method, economically with extremely simple purification and separation operations.
