Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain 5-substituted 2-chloropyridines in a high yield by a simple method, by reacting acetanamide with a chlorinating agent in the presence of N,N-disubstituted dimethylformamide.
CONSTITUTION: The compd. of formula I [R and R1 are each an alkyl or arylalkyl (each of which may be replaced by a halogen)] such as N-benzyl-N-(1- propenyl)-acetamide is reacted with a chlorinating agent such as phosphoryl chloride, oxalyl chloride and phosgene at a temp. of -30 to 150°C, preferrably -10 to 130°C, in the presence of N,N-disubstituted formamide (such as dimethylformamide) and optionally in the presence of a diluent to obtain the compd. of formula II such as 2-chloro-5-methylpyridine.
