Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for a pharmaceutical, etc., at a low cost in high yield and purity, by subjecting an alicyclic diol compound to dehydration reaction in the presence of a specific catalyst in a liquid phase.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II is obtained by subjecting an alicyclic diol compound of formula I (X is a single bond, CH2, etc.; R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-6C alkyl; (m) and (n) are each 0-2) [preferably, bis(4- hydroxycyclohexyl), bis(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)sulfone, etc.] to dehydration reaction in the presence of a catalyst selected from copper catalysts (e.g. a copper oxide) and Raney nickel catalysts (e.g. Raney nickel) in a liquid phase preferably at 200-240°C. Further, in the case of a copper catalyst, it is preferably used in a form of tablet as a fixed bed catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out by using a solvent, and ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, a polyalkylbenzene, etc., is preferable as the solvent.
