PURPOSE: To produce the title compound useful as an antioxidant or an intermediate thereof in high purity, in high yield, industrially and advantageously by continuously reacting a 2,6-alkylphenol with a smaller amount based on the 2,6-alkylphenol of an alkyl acrylate.
CONSTITUTION: 1mol 2,6-dialkylphenol is continuously reacted with <1.0mol, especially 0.75-<1.0mol alkyl acrylate in the presence of 0.05-<0.5 based on 1mol 2,6-dialkylphenol of an alkali or alkaline earth metal-2,6-dialkyl phenoxide as a catalyst to give an alkyl β-(3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate. Since this method reduces the amount of the catalyst used, formation of by-products can be suppressed. For example, 2,6-di-t-butylphenol in excess has a high-boiling point, has high recovery ratio, is reusable and also in high yield.
