Abstract:
To efficiently produce an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester at a low cost and obtain a catalyst capable of efficiently producing the α- hydroxycarboxylic acid ester at the low cost.
A 1,2-diol is oxidized in the vapor phase in a reactor 7 at the former stage and the produced gaseous α-oxoaldehyde, together with an alcohol gasified in a gasifying chamber 14, is then introduced into a reactor 11 at the latter stage and reacted in the presence of a catalyst in the reactor 11 at the latter stage to thereby produce an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester. Thereby, the α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester is produced in a substantially one stage by using the inexpensive 1,2-diol as a raw material. The catalyst comprises a solid acid catalyst.
