To easily remove catalyst residue without generating a metal- containing waste liquid and obtain the subject copolymer in high yield by adding a specific amount of an active hydrogen-containing compound to a homogeneous reaction solution containing an α-olefin-cycloolefin copolymer.
A compound containing active hydrogen (e.g. water or methanol) is added to (A) a homogeneous reaction solution containing an α-olefin- cycloolefin copolymer produced by the addition polymerization of a ≥2C α-olefin and a cycloolefin in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a metallocene catalyst or (B) a homogeneous reaction solution containing a hydrogenated above copolymer produced by hydrogenating a copolymer of the above α-olefin and a cycloolefin having ≥2 C=C bonds in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a homogeneous hydrogenation catalyst. The active hydrogen equivalent of the active hydrogen-containing compound is 0.2-20 times the oxidation number standard equivalent of the total metals in the above catalyst.
