Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an α,α'-dichloroadipic acid diester in high yield without formation of tarry matter as by-product, by chlorinating a polyadipic acid polyanhydride in a solvent followed by direct reaction with an alcohol to effect esterification.
CONSTITUTION: Firstly, a polyadipic acid polyanhydride of formula I ((n) is ≥2) is reacted with chlorine in a solvent to produce an α,α'-dichloropolyadipic acid polyanhydride of formula II. Subsequently, this compound is reacted with an alcohol of formula ROH (R is a 1-12C alkyl, an aryl or an aralkyl) in a solvent to produce the objective α,α'-dichloroadipic acid diester of formula III. This reaction is preferably carried out in one pot. The solvent to be used is pref. an aromatic halocarbon, esp. dichlorobenzene or trichlorobenzene. The alcohol to be used is pref. methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, or t-butanol.
