PURPOSE: To obtain a new amide compound of an organic sulfide useful as a metal surface-washing agent, an antioxidant for e.g. a polymer and a manufacturing raw material for various kinds of chemical industry products and obtainable on an industrial scale at a low cost in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: This is an amide compound of an organic sulfide expressed by formula I [S is sulfur; R is a 2-8C hydrocarbon residue; Z is formula II (R1 and R2 are each H, methyl or ethyl; X2 is H when X1 is H and CONH2 when X1 is CN) or formula III], e.g. 3-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thiolpropionamide. A compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a nitrile compound of an organic sulfide of formula IV [Y is formula V (X1 is H or CN) or formula VI] with water. A nitrile compound of an organic sulfide of formula IV is obtained e.g. by reacting a mercaptoalkanol with an unsaturated nitrile or by reacting a mercaptoalkanol with a halogenonitrile.
