Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a trialkylamine by the reaction of mono and di-lower alkylamines and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper or copper oxide, zinc or zinc oxide and alkali metal base.
CONSTITUTION: Mono and di-lower alkylamines are allowed to react with 8 to 22C primary alcohol in a liquid phase, preferably in the presence of hydrogen at least in a part of the reaction time, at 190 to 230°C to obtain the objective compd. In this reaction, a catalyst comprising copper and/or copper oxide, zinc and/or zinc oxide, and alkaline earth metal base (e.g. barium carbonate) is used. The catalyst is used by 0.001 to 25 wt.%, preferably 1 to 5 wt.% of the weight of the reaction mixture.
