PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain an amine oxide useful as cosmetics, such as detergents and shampoos, and as a surfactant component while suppressing the formation of nitrosoamine impurities by bringing a tert-amine into reaction with hydrogen peroxide water in the presence of a promoter formed from carbon dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: The objective amine oxide is obtd. by bringing the tert-amine and the hydrogen peroxide into reaction at ≤45°C, more particularly at ≤40°C in the presence of the promoter formed by adding the carbon dioxide to a reaction mixture. The hydrogen peroxide water is preferably 20 to 40 wt.% H2O2 and the reaction is effected by using 1 to 5 mol per 1 mol tert-amine. The impurity nitrosoamine usually formed in the case the tert-amine and the hydrogen peroxide are brought into reaction is suspicious to be a carcinogenic substance and mutation source.
