To provide a method, which can stably produce an aminocarbazole in high yield while preventing deteriorated reaction rate, yield or the like by lot of the nitrocarbazole as the stock.

This method is to produce an aminocarbazole by catalytic reduction of the nitrocarbazole, wherein the catalyst is a nickel-based catalyst, activated with an alkali and iron compound in an inert solvent in a hydrogen or inert gas atmosphere. It is preferable that the activated nickel-based catalyst contains the iron compound at 10 to 60 wt.% as the metal, based on the nickel- based catalyst, and that the nitrocarbazole is 1-nitro-9-lower alkyl substituted carbazole and/or 3-nitro-9-lower alkyl substituted carbazole.
