PURPOSE: To synthesize an anthraquinone compound having excellent quality in high yield while suppressing the formation of by-product to an extremely low level compared with conventional process by carrying out the reaction in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone solvent.

CONSTITUTION: The objective anthraquinone compound of formula III can be produced in high purity and yield by using 1,8-dioxy-4,5-dinitroanthraquinone of formula I and aminophenylethanol of formula II as raw materials. The problem of waste-water treatment can be solved by this process.
