PURPOSE: To obtain an antibacterial zeolite having further improved antibacterial properties by treating zeolite carrying antibacterial metallic ion with a strong basic aqueous solution.
CONSTITUTION: Zeolite carrying metallic ion of silver, copper or zinc, etc., especially silver ion preferably by ion-exchange reaction is treated with a strong basic aqueous solution, preferably caustic alkali, especially aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide and more preferably treated with keeping pH of said aqueous solution to ≥11, especially ≥13 to afford the objective antibacterial zeolite optimum for use of alga-inhibition or as an additive to aqueous paint because of having steeply excellent antibacterial activity in comparing to one not treated with said aqueous solution. Especially, the antibacterial activity is persisted for a long period of time by using in a liquid or water containing other various metallic ions. Besides, said antibacterial zeolite has a combined effect of hygroscopic effect and absorbing effect as intrinsic functions of zeolite and an antibacterial effect.
