To provide an industrially satisfiable method for producing an aromatic aldehyde, by which the aromatic aldehyde useful as an intermediate for a medicine, a perfume or the like is produced at a high reaction rate in high yield by reacting a specific complex with an aromatic amine in an organic solvent, and hydrolyzing the product.
(A) A complex formed by reacting (i) a secondary acid amide such as N,N-dimethylformamide with (ii) phosgene is reacted with (B) an aromatic amine such as N,N-dimethylaniline in (C) an organic solvent such as 1,2-dichloroethane at 0-5°C for 1-5 hr, and aged for additional about 1 hr, and the product is hydrolyzed by adding water thereto to provide the objective p-N,N-dialkylaminobenzaldehyde or the like in the method for producing the aromatic aldehyde. The using amount of each components is 1-1.1 molar times of the component A(ii) as much as the amount of the component A(i), 2-10 molar times of the component B as much as the amount of the component A(i), and 1.5-5 molar times of the component C as much as the total amount of the components A(i) and B.
