Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high conversion ratio and in high concentrations without formation of formic acid, etc., as byproducts, by oxida tion of a specific arylalkyl hydrocarbon with an oxygen-contg. gas in the pres ence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of (A) a catalyst consisting of such a binuclear μ-oxomanganese complex in which two molecules of a cyclic triamine compound each having three nitrogen atoms in the molecule are coordinated with manganese ions, respectively, with the number ratio: manganese ions/coordinated nitrogen atoms of (1:3) [e.g. a catalyst consisting of a complex of formula I (R1-R3 are each H, a 1-8C alkyl, or alkenyl, a cycloalkyl, etc.; X1 and X2 are each O, OO, S, etc.; Y is an oxidatively stable monovalent or divalent counterion; (n) is 1 when Y is divalent, being 2 when Y is monovalent)], (B) a compound of formula II (P and Q are each H or an alkyl; (n) is 1-3; Ar is a n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group) is oxidized by (C) an oxygen-contg. gas to obtain the objective compound.
