PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for dyes, agricultural chemicals and medicines and developer for heat- and pressure- sensitive recording paper, by reacting a diphenyl carbonate with benzenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of a small amount of a Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: A diphenyl carbonate expressed by formula II (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, lower alkyl or phenyl) and a benzenesulfonyl chloride expressed by formula II (R3WR5 are H, halogen, lower alkyl or alkoxy and two of R3WR5 may link to form a ring) are subjected to condensation reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. ferric chloride) at -10W+20°C. The Lewis acid is used in an amount of 0.01W10wt.%, preferably 0.5W5wt.% based on the compound expressed by formula I. Hydrochloric acid, etc., are then added to carry out hydrolysis and afford the aimed substance expressed by formula III.
