To provide a method and apparatus suitable to the demand of small required quantity and for a short time even in the case of continuous production or individual production at the time of producing a bar material having 60-400mm from a light metal or a light metal alloy, particularly a magnesium or a magnesium alloy.

In this method, a tubular metallic mold having an inner diameter or an inside cross section corresponding to the desired diameter or the cross section of the bar material is used. The apparatus for performing this method uses the mold 1 constituted as a smoothly tubular body or the mold provided with a cooling rib 3 and/or a coolant piping. Also, the mold 1 is made of an extrusion-formed aluminum or an extrusion-formed aluminum alloy.
