Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a benzyl halide through fewer steps in high yield and in high purity, by reacting an α,α'-dihaloxylene derivative at a certain proportion or higher with a metallic salt of a phenol derivative as starting material.
CONSTITUTION: By reacting a metallic salt of a phenol derivative of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-5C alkyl, a 1-5C alkoxy, a 2-4C alkenyl, a halogen, CF3; A is an alkaline metal or an alkaline earth metal) with an α,α'-dihaloxylene derivative of formula II (X is a halogen) at a proportion of ≥1.5 molar times, esp. 2-6 molar times, the objective benzyl halide of formula III can be obtained. The compound of formula I can be obtained by dripping a base into a mixture composed of a phenol derivative of formula IV and ≥1.5 molar times, based on the phenol derivative, of an α,α'-dihaloxylene derivative of formula II. The reaction solvent is pref. a mixture of an organic solvent with water, and it is preferable that a phase-transfer catalyst be made to coexist in the reactional system. The compound of formula III is useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
