To easily and efficiently produce a compound by reacting a phenylene- bispropenoic acid derivative with an alkyl halide.
The objective bis(oxy)-bis(1,4-phenylene)bispropenoic acid diester of the formula II is produced by reacting a 3,3'-[alkylenebis(oxy)-1,4-phenylene- bis(2-propenoic acid)] of the formula I (R1 is an alkylene, a cycloalkylene, an O-containing alkylene, an OH-containing alkylene, etc.; R2 is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy or a halogen) with an alkyl halide of the formula, R3X (R3 is an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, etc.; X is a halogen). The reaction is carried out in an organic solvent (e.g. DMF) in the presence of a dehydrohalogenation agent (e.g. anhydrous potassium carbonate) under heating and refluxing. The compound can be produced at a low cost because the process does not use a malonic acid half-ester which is difficult to produce.
