Title:
PRODUCTION OF BROMINATED POLYSTYRENE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3471086
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a compound having high bromine content suitable as a flame retardant having good hue and excellent in heat resistance by brominating a polystyrene dissolved in a halogenated hydrocarbon with water content-containing bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: This method for producing brominated polystyrene comprises using. bromine containing 30-300ppm water content when brominated polystyrene is produced by reacting polystyrene with bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. Methylene chloride is preferably used as the solvent. Bromine containing 30-100ppm water content is preferably used in an amount of ≥l2mol based on 1mol of benzene ring of polystyrene. Aluminum chloride is preferably used as the catalyst. A polystyrene having 20000-250000 weight-average molecular weight is used as the polystyrene.
