PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for agricultural chemical, medicine, etc., at a short time in high selectivity and yield, by brominating acetonitrile with bromine in the presence of phosphorus tribromide.
CONSTITUTION: When acetonitrile is brominated with bromine, the reaction is carried out in the presence of phosphorus tribromide added to the reaction system at 40W90°C, preferably 60W80°C to provide the aimed product. The reaction is preferably carried out without using any solvent, through an organic solvent can be used as a solvent. Bromine and phosphorus tribromide are each used at amounts of 0.01W2 times mol. and 0.001W0.1 times mol. based on the acetonitrile raw material. Bromoacetonitrile can be converted to 2-bromo-3,3- dimethyl-N-(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)butylamide useful as an agricultural chemical by reacting the bromoacetonitrile with tert.-butyl bromide and further α- methylstyrene.
