PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a precursor of agricultural chemicals and isocyanates under low reaction pressure in high yield, by reacting an amine or amino acid with carbon monoxide, an alcohol and oxygen in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst under specific condition.

CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is produced by reacting an amine or amino acid with carbon monoxide, an alcohol and oxygen or an organic nitro compound in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a transition metal of platinum group of the periodic table or its compound (e.g. PdCl2) while supplying alcohol and amine or amino acid to the system in such a manner as to get a stoichiometric reaction ratio of the hydroxyl group/amino group in the reaction system of 0.3W4.9, preferably 1W3. The reaction is carried out in the absence of solvent or in a solvent such as benzene at 60W230°C under a CO partial pressure of 1W50kg/cm2.
