PURPOSE: To easily form a cast ingot having excellent surface quality without having component fluctuations by lining the inside surface of a metallic mold for ingot making with ceramic paper and filling a molten metal into the metallic mold.
CONSTITUTION: A molten steel 3 is filled into the metallic mold 1 for ingot making lined with the ceramic paper 2 on the inside surface. The ceramic paper 2 is preferably formed of the ceramic fibers consisting of refractory oxides such as Al2O3, BeO, MgO.Al2O3, ThO2 and ZrO2. The molten steel 3 immediately forms a solidified shell but the the shell contacts with the ceramic paper 2 having good heat insulating property and therefore the surface part of the steel ingot solidifies gradually. The surface part of the cast ingot obtd. in the above-mentioned manner is therefore beautiful with less ruggedness, by which the amt. of the surface to be ground in a post stage is decreased and the yield of the product is improved. The molten metal 3 and the paper 2 do not react with each other. The cast ingot having the uniform components is thus formed.
